Just when it looked like the MMA Gods would be merciful to arguably the biggest fight card in UFC history, the New York State Athletic Commission pulled the plug on one of UFC 205′s marquee matchups.

At the eleventh hour, the NYSAC has refused Rashad Evans a license to fight Tim Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. According to Evans (via MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani), the commission would not clear him for the undercard bout due to an undisclosed medical issue.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion believes he passed a second round of tests after an Oct. 19 MRI revealed some irregularities, but the NYAC obviously did not see it that way. Ufc 205 streaming

“I’m healthy,” Evans told Helwani. “It’s just the commission and their rules. I guess they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to this.”

Whatever “this” is has pushed back the 37-year-old’s much-anticipated middleweight debut. As a result, Kennedy has been left without an opponent for the historic New York show. Fortunately, there are a few big-money opponents that could swoop in and salvage the scrap last-minute, a la Anderson Silva at UFC 200.

And Kennedy, ever the opportunist, has already called out all of them.

According to Helwani, Evans vs. Kennedy is now in the works for UFC 206. Helwani’s report was later confirmed by the UFC.

It’s a shame that UFC 205 couldn’t get one more “money fight,” but to be honest, 206 needed this matchup more than 205 needed any of the names on Page 2.

The UFC has released a statement saying: “There are currently no plans to replace this bout.” In other words, the card will most likely move forward with 12 fights, but there’s still a chance that Dana White and co. change their minds. Ufc 205 ppv
